Crisis Looms As Northern Governors Protest Funds Disbursement

Emerging signals from the Northern Governors’ Forum, NGF may create more troubles in the days ahead for the management and disbursement of the Covid-19 intervention funds to states, as the forum is reported to have disapproved the isolated allocation of N10 billion to Lagos State to help boost its fight to contain the spread of the virus.

The NGF, in a statement by its Chairman and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong said, “So far, no state in the region had received a dime as special allocation despite the fact that some of them have recorded cases while others are making frantic efforts to prevent any outbreak, as well as prepare against any eventuality.”

The statement continued, “This they observed has eaten deep into the pockets of the states as they have spent a lot of money already and may not be able to sustain this for a long time. Since prevention is better than cure, they canvassed that the Federal Government grant them some special funds just as it has done to other states.”

What first appeared as a rejection of the special treatment accorded Lagos, came earlier from Anambra and Rivers States, where the Governors demanded for different sums for their efforts at keeping their states safe from the virus.

THE CONVERSATION, a public affairs analytic series had raised the alarm of an impending crisis from other states, if the criteria for fund disbursement is not properly coordinated and defined.
