Enforce Compulsory Use Of Face Mask

While we view with delight the responses and renewed resolve by President Muhammadu Buhari, the state governors and health professionals at insisting on continuous lockdown as the only available option in the fight against the Covid-19 scourge, we however must point out that the 14 days lockdown strategy earlier introduced and very loosely inferred to in a statement from the presidency, has proven to be “ineffective” with weak enforcement strength.

“The Conversation” series is calling for the adoption of a revised containment strategy, which is a 7 day total lockdown throughout the country and the introduction of a compulsory use of face mask in all public places as a strategy to help flatten the rising curve of the pandemic.

While the revised option will give the people a mental reduction in the number of days they will have to stay at home thereby enlisting their needed cooperation with the order, it will also afford the government a shorter time frame to enforce strict compliance.

Given the dense population in most of our communities in Nigeria, the use of face mask which has enjoyed global acceptance as a proven method to prevent the contracting and spread of COVID-19, will give more bite to our collective resolve to ultimately defeat the pandemic.
